Borrowash began their Buckingham Insurance League Challenge Cup against fellow Premier Division South side Blidworth Welfare.
Despite being at opposite ends of the table, Blidworth proved to be much tougher than perhaps some may have expected.
After a fairly even opening 25 minutes, excellent pressing and recovery work from the youthful Marcus Tudgay lead to a free kick on the edge of the Blidworth box. Despite the free kick hitting the wall, the ball fell to Durrell Berry 25 yards out, and, finding himself in very unfamiliar territory, D took a swing and launched the ball into the top left hand corner for the opening goal.
The lead lasted 2 minutes when a mix up in defence led to the contentious award of a penalty. The controversy wasn't over as after a fantastic save down low to his right hand side, Nooney was adjusted to have been off his line so the referee awarded a retake. The second spot kick was converted for a half time score of 1-1.
The second half was a similarly even affair until Blidworth took the lead on the 67th minute.
With 20 minutes to go, Vics were staring knock out in the face. Thankfully, when you have someone with the dead ball quality of Ben Hilton, set pieces will always be a threat.
The equaliser came courtesy of Ethan Watson, who finished from a wonderful corner kick dropped dangerously inside the 6 yard box. 5 minutes later, an almost carbon copy gave Vics the lead, this time finished of by Basher.
The Vics managed to see out the last 10 minutes of the game and could have perhaps nicked a 4th were it not for a smart save by the Blidworth keeper.
